The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Covid-Proof Industry Internship: Bring It Inside the Classroom by Stephanie Gapud, Jennifer Henson, and Christian Acosta-Flamma of Spring Hill College and TELANTO Global Academic Business Network.
Presentation Abstract: Covid-19 has halted the traditional experiential learning inside the industry. This pandemic has triggered educators to be adaptable to continuously bridge the knowledge and skills between the academe and the workplace. Albert Einstein, once said that “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of minds to think.” Training the next generation of knowledge workers to have a global mindset is made easier by the modernization in telecommunications. We are in the stage of interconnectivity and the world seems smaller and flat. Global collaborations have never been easier and cheaper. Industry challenges can now be broadcasted in a marketplace such as Telanto.com where experts in the academe anywhere the world can take a shot at participating in solving industry problems which obviously has real-world impact. International industry internships can now be brought inside the classroom thereby promoting equity in education. Moreover, in project-based learning students will take great pride in their work because their output will be meaningful. Depending on the network that instructor is embedded in, teams can be multi-campus or multi-country. We will share the experience of the Spring Hill College, Division of Business students as they solved challenges posted by the European industry collaborators, sourced through Telanto. Furthermore, we argue that the academe’s understanding of the high levels of engagement in the workplace through meaningfulness of work should translate to the way we engage our students in the halls of higher education.
