At Marshall University, Clare Walker has built a college experience defined by resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to growth through leadership. As a 2026 SAM National Outstanding Student Award recipient, she stands among the top student leaders within the Society for Advancement of Management, recognized for her ability to turn challenge into meaningful progress.

Clare’s journey has not followed a straight line. Early in her college experience, she faced uncertainty about where she belonged, changing majors multiple times before finding her path in Finance and Management. During that process, she also came to better understand herself, including navigating the realities of being neurodivergent. Rather than allowing that uncertainty to define her limits, she used it as a catalyst to rethink how she could succeed and where she could grow.

That turning point led her to SAM, where she found an environment that connected classroom learning with real-world application. Through collaboration, competition, and leadership opportunities, Clare began to see management not just as a field of study, but as a skill set that could be actively developed. She strengthened her ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and approach challenges with both strategy and empathy.

Her leadership has been especially evident in her role as Vice President of Membership and Programming for Marshall’s SAM chapter. In this position, she has taken on the responsibility of building engagement, planning initiatives, and creating opportunities for students to connect with professional development experiences. Her work reflects a clear understanding that strong organizations are built through intentional effort and consistent participation.

Beyond SAM, Clare’s impact extends across campus and into the broader community. Through her leadership in Delta Sigma Pi, she has played a key role in revitalizing chapter recruitment, fundraising, and programming, helping the organization regain momentum and achieve recognition at a national level. Her efforts contributed to significant increases in engagement and positioned the chapter for continued success.

She has also demonstrated a strong commitment to creating opportunities for others. Through her involvement on the Dean’s Student Advisory Board, she helped establish initiatives that support student organizations and foster greater collaboration within the College of Business. Her work in this space reflects a broader leadership philosophy centered on inclusion, access, and the belief that students should be active participants in shaping their educational experience.

Academically, Clare has maintained a strong record while pursuing a double major in Finance and Management, complemented by minors in Supply Chain Management and Economics. Her commitment to growth is further reflected in her professional experiences, including roles in customer service, residence life, and human resources, where she has developed practical skills in communication, operations, and organizational support.

What sets Clare apart is her willingness to lean into discomfort as part of the growth process. Rather than seeking certainty, she has embraced learning, recognizing that leadership is not about having all the answers, but about being willing to engage, adapt, and continue moving forward.

The National Outstanding Student Award recognizes students who demonstrate sustained growth, leadership, and meaningful contribution. Clare Walker embodies each of these qualities. Her journey reflects the power of persistence, the value of community, and the impact of choosing to step forward even when the path is not fully clear.

As she continues forward, Clare represents the kind of leader SAM is designed to develop. One who understands that growth is not always linear, but that it is always possible with the right mindset and support.
