Digital transformation has become a defining priority for organizations seeking long-term relevance, efficiency, and resilience. Yet many digital initiatives fall short, not because of technological limitations, but due to gaps in leadership, readiness, and organizational alignment. This accepted scholarly research presentation examines how Sustainable Digital Transformation (SDT) can be reframed as a leadership-driven process rather than a purely technical one.
Drawing on an extensive synthesis of management, information systems, and sustainability research, the study explores why digital investments often fail to generate enduring economic, social, and environmental value. The authors argue that sustainable digital transformation depends less on the adoption of new tools and more on sociotechnical alignment, leadership behavior, and organizational culture. Key factors examined include digital leadership readiness, employee empowerment, data quality, and the growing challenges of digital debt and digital pollution.
The presentation introduces a structured SDT framework designed to help managers align digital initiatives with Environmental, Social, and Governance objectives while reducing transformation risk. Rather than treating sustainability as an outcome, the framework positions it as a guiding principle embedded throughout decision-making, goal setting, and implementation processes. The research highlights how leadership commitment and participative approaches can improve digital readiness and strengthen organizational resilience in volatile and resource-constrained environments.
Designed for scholars, practitioners, and innovation leaders, this session offers actionable insights for organizations seeking to move beyond short-term digital gains toward durable, future-ready transformation. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how leadership, culture, and readiness shape the success of digital transformation initiatives.
