Transformational leadership continues to play a critical role in how organizations lead change, build culture, and strengthen organizational health. This accepted practitioner research presentation offers a comprehensive review of the transformational leadership literature, examining how the theory has evolved and how it can be applied effectively in contemporary leadership development initiatives.
Grounded in a structured and methodical literature review process, this research defines the scope of transformational leadership scholarship by identifying key terms, landmark studies, and leading researchers in the field. The review includes the development of an annotated bibliography and a synthesis of both foundational and recent studies, providing a clear map of how transformational leadership has been studied, applied, and refined over time.
The primary purpose of this work is to inform the Transformational Leadership Growth Lab project at the University of South Carolina Palmetto College. This initiative supports Campus Deans and Associate Deans of Academic and Student Affairs as they lead institutional change aligned with Palmetto College’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. By grounding leadership development efforts in established research, the project ensures that leadership practice is informed by evidence rather than intuition alone.
Beyond its institutional application, this review offers value to leaders and organizations nationally and globally who are seeking to improve organizational health through transformational leadership. By drawing practical implications, identifying limitations, and outlining areas for continued research, the presentation connects theory to practice in a way that supports sustainable leadership development and organizational transformation.
Designed for practitioners, academic leaders, and organizational change agents, this session provides a research-based foundation for understanding transformational leadership and applying it intentionally across complex organizational environments.
