How does a chapter increase membership more than 100 percent-to a total of 145-in just one year? The Glassboro State Chapter did it by exposing the entire college community to S.A.M. activities. Doing this is where the key to every campus chapter’s success or failure lies.
Glassboro is now the nation’s fourth largest S.A.M. chapter. Our speedy growth the chapter has been in existence only three years-has been greatly aided by our extensive mailing campaigns. Through the use of promotional material (including both the national S.A.M. brochure and a local brochure we both designed and printed), we have instilled an interest in those students who are not members to want to improve their management skills. We sent out a large package of information to all 800 Glassboro business majors approximately one month before the start of fall semester classes. This was followed by the establishment of an information booth at freshman orientation and in-class appeals for members during the first two weeks of the semester. Copies of our newsletter, The Manager’s Hearsay, were also distributed to all students on the first day of fall semester classes, and the publication always contains a long article pointing out the benefits of S.A.M. membership.
An established feature at Glassboro is the annual S.A.M. sponsored Career Day, during which students are afforded the opportunity to expand their awareness of the job market. Local and national business and industry people provide guidance and advice to students undecided in the choice of a career. This all-day workshop annually draws more than 600 students. The Glassboro Chapter intends to continue with all these successful activities in the future. One new addition for the 1976-1977 school year will be a special kind of guest speaker at our meetings: Whenever possible, a former S.A.M. member (and Glassboro graduate) will be invited to come back to school for a few hours and discuss problems that are faced by all new managers.
