At Marshall University, Michael Borsuk has done more than participate in student leadership. He has rebuilt it. As a 2026 Regional Outstanding Student Award recipient, his journey reflects the kind of initiative, discipline, and commitment to service that defines the very purpose of this recognition.
For Michael, leadership has never been about holding a title. It has been about taking responsibility for something that needed to be strengthened and seeing it through. When he stepped into the role of President of the Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) chapter at Marshall University, the organization was in need of renewed energy and direction. His goal was clear from the start: reestablish the chapter, rebuild engagement, and reconnect students with the opportunities SAM provides at both the regional and national levels.
That kind of work does not happen overnight. It requires planning, persistence, and the ability to bring people together around a shared purpose. Through his leadership, the chapter regained momentum, expanded its reach, and created new pathways for students to engage in professional development and competition. More importantly, it restored a sense of connection between students, faculty, and the broader SAM community.
Michael’s academic journey reflects the same level of ambition and discipline. Pursuing an Accelerated MBA while completing a Bachelor of Business Administration with dual majors in Business Management and Political Science, along with minors in Legal Environment and Constitutional Democracy, he has maintained a strong academic record with a 3.64 GPA and consistent Dean’s List recognition. His coursework spans finance, law, negotiations, and public policy, giving him a well-rounded perspective on both business and governance.
What sets Michael apart is how seamlessly he applies that knowledge beyond the classroom. His professional experiences demonstrate a clear commitment to public service and practical leadership. From assisting the County Administrator in Ohio County with digital governance and public communications to contributing to policy development and community outreach initiatives, he has consistently sought opportunities to make an impact. His work has included everything from drafting social media policy and coordinating public safety communications to helping design a countywide artificial intelligence policy framework.
His experiences in the legal field and public sector further reinforce this commitment. Through his work with the Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, he gained exposure to the legal system while supporting case preparation and research. As a Regional Field Director for a congressional campaign, he led volunteer coordination and community engagement efforts, demonstrating his ability to operate in high-pressure, fast-paced environments where communication and organization are critical.
Service has remained a constant thread throughout his journey. As a board member of the Ohio Valley Medical Center Historical Society, Michael contributes to preserving local history while leading outreach and communication initiatives. As a Merit Badge Counselor with the Boy Scouts of America, he mentors young individuals and helps foster leadership development at an early stage. These experiences reflect a broader philosophy that leadership is not confined to one role or organization. It is a responsibility that carries across every space he engages in.
Within SAM, that philosophy is evident in how he leads. His advisor notes that Michael has not only expanded the chapter’s reach but has also strengthened its ability to connect students with meaningful professional opportunities. He leads with a combination of structure and humility, creating an environment where others are encouraged to step forward, contribute, and grow.
Balancing an accelerated graduate program, undergraduate studies, leadership responsibilities, internships, and community service requires more than time management. It requires clarity of purpose. Michael has demonstrated that ability by consistently aligning his efforts with a broader goal of service, development, and impact.
The Regional Outstanding Student Award exists to recognize students who demonstrate meaningful growth and contribution over time. Michael Borsuk’s journey reflects both. He has taken on challenges that required initiative, followed through with execution, and created opportunities not just for himself, but for others around him.
As he continues his academic and professional path, there is little doubt that his approach to leadership will remain rooted in the same principles that have guided him so far. Build what needs to be built. Strengthen what needs to be strengthened. And bring others along in the process.
Michael Borsuk’s story is a reminder that leadership is not always about starting something new. Sometimes, it is about recognizing what is worth rebuilding and committing to the work required to make it better.
