Title Slide for Hybrid Leadership and Its Relationship to Inclusion in Healthcare

The programming committee for the 78th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Hybrid Leadership and Its Relationship to Inclusion in Healthcare by Jack McCann and Betsy Sparks of Prudue University Global and Point University.

Leadership is a critical component in the management of healthcare organizations to address financial limitations, availability of skilled workforce, globalization, disruptive innovation, implementing new technology, and hyper-competition. This challenging environment has forced many healthcare organizations to change their bureaucratic organizational structure to a more organic one headed by leaders rather than managers. There are a number of leadership styles to consider for the healthcare leader, but this research focuses on hybrid leadership and its relationship to inclusion in today’s workplace. There are positive and negative aspects of each leadership style. However, the most benefits for the healthcare organization can be achieved by using the most suitable leadership style for the given context.
The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of different leadership styles on workplace inclusion to determine which leadership styles better promote workplace inclusion. We examined nine leadership and hybrid leadership styles using the VanSimpco Leadership Survey. The leadership styles were transactional, democratic, autocratic, autocratic-transformational, autocratic-transactional, democratic-transformational, democratic-transactional, transformational, and laissez-faire. For inclusion, we used Chung et al.’s Work Group Inclusion scale. We surveyed 174 healthcare employees and found that autocratic, autocratic-transformational, democratic-transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles impacted workplace inclusion. This research is based on Leader-Member Exchange and Optimal Distinction theories.
