Presentation Abstract: Accurate and reliable ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting and metrics are increasingly sought by investors and regulators to understand the companies’ risk management practices and plans for future improvements. ESG reporting involves qualitative discussions and quantitative metrics about companies’ performance on ESG risk monitoring and practices. Accelerating climate change has made the understanding of impact on natural, social, and human resources critical for societal welfare, but the politically charged climate in US is affecting the science behind environmental component. Surveys have shown that companies showing progress in meeting ESG goals are likely to attract larger investments and boost their stock price. Advanced analytics and forecasting capabilities will be needed to gather, analyze, and interpret large quantities of structured and unstructured data an derive insights to provide credible ESG reports. Combining analytics with natural language processing (NLP), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and Blockchain can help companies generate actionable and useful strategies. Educational institutions need to prepare the next generation of accounting professionals to understand the global companies’ ESG reporting requirements and the use of emerging technologies to enhance stakeholder value. This study provides an overview of global initiatives, reviews current practices in ESG reporting and use of new technologies and suggests a curriculum to develop skills of future accounting.
