Presentation announcement for Building and Licensing Knowledge in New Product Development

The programming committee for the 78th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Building and Licensing Knowledge in New Product Development by Kimberly Green and Erich Bergiel from the University of West Georgia.

Presentation Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between the building of knowledge and the use of that knowledge. Product development is a multi-stage process that often involves multiple firms who are managing numerous categories of knowledge. This study considers how the characteristics of the knowledge-building effort in the development stage are related to the out-licensing opportunities. Using a dataset of 5,307 drugs across 85 pharmaceutical firms, the analysis finds that the product development efforts that are exploratory for the developers have a greater number of licensees. The results show that both product-related and market-related variables are associated with the number of licensees.
