Quarantined! Isolated but not insulated from pandemic era civil unrest

The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Quarantined! Isolated But Not Insulated From Pandemic Era Civil Unrest: Lessons Learned About Acceptance And Belonging In A New World by David Auberry and Monica Valentine of Campbellsville University and Kentucky State University.

Presentation Abstract: Many new challenges concerning diversity and inclusion have surfaced over the past two years, causing the workplace experience to change dramatically. Events magnified by the advent of COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement have led to a surge in aggressive behavior targeting minority campus populations, including Asian, Indian, Hispanic, and African American workers and students. In fact, unprecedented new management challenges among all industries, including K-12 and higher education, have emerged. In this presentation, the researchers will present significant research findings and actionable solutions to achieve a post-pandemic future with workplace and classroom practices centered on equity and inclusion. Real-life experiences and strategies to best handle and mitigate these challenges will be shared to address inequities and ideas for continuing to work towards new norms, even when the future is uncertain. Tools to effectively manage unique situations of discrimination in today’s ever-changing workforce that includes brick and mortar, as well as an increasing number of distanced working environments, will be presented. Attendees will leave the session having learned new and innovative methods that incorporate values-based execution strategies for a clear path forward. Implications for business owners, management, higher education administrators, faculty, and staff who seek an effective, practical, and peaceful approach to handling diversity with inclusivity during times of civil unrest will be considered.
