The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Launching and Managing an eSports Program in Higher Education by Mike Sonntag, Adrienne Cataldo, Hennie Van Bulck, Susan Elkins, and Kristopher Weissmann of the University of South Carolina Sumter and the University of South Carolina Palmetto College.
Presentation Abstract: One of the most rapidly growing sports programs at higher education institutions across the country is eSports — yes, eSports! From competitive scholarships to national championships, eSports is becoming increasingly popular among institutions and the many students they attract. This session will describe how an institution of higher education in the two-year sector developed, launched, and is successfully managing a new eSports program that was the first eSports program in South Carolina among public institutions. Perspectives will be provided that include administration at the institution level, from the athletic department leadership, and the financial perspective of the impact on the institution. Lessons learned will be applicable to the higher education sector as well as to the broader areas of management across sectors.
