Why Leaders Must Recognize and Address the Toxic Hotspots, Idea Black Holes and Supernova Nebulae in their Organizations!

The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Why Leaders Must Recognize and Address the Toxic Hotspots, Idea Black Holes and Supernova Nebulae in their Organizations!, authored Binod Sundararajan and Malavika Sundararajan from the Dalhousie University and Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Presentation Abstract: Organizational Leaders can often be blindsided by sudden employee turnovers and be confused by the lack of growth in spite of the support they offer their employees. Many times, leaders remain unaware of very small cliques that get formed within their organizations. These can be in the form of toxic hotspots where employees have turned bullying others through repeated micro aggressive taunts as the norm. This results in the bullied employees becoming non responsive to any calls for participation or they are scared to speak at meetings as they are worried they will be made fun of for simply wanting to do their work. Similarly, there may be others who will appear interested in everything, but any idea that is sent their way will never see the light of day. They may either divert attention to another topic, or will always play the devil’s advocate thus killing the idea even before it has a chance to take flight. Finally, you have several supernovas who start big, claim to be the big picture person but when it actually comes down to getting the work done, they are vague and hazy like the nebulae and vanish into thin air when called to report the work done. We explore all the above issues which are obstructers of knowledge flow and progress in organizations and propose actions that leaders can take to remove these obstructions to ensure continuous flow of knowledge and successful implementation of ideas across their organization.
