Infusing AI into the Online Classroom: A Student Perspective on Using Teacherbots

The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Infusing AI into the Online Classroom: A Student Perspective on Using Teacherbots, authored by Robert Gordon, Kandis Wyatt, Wanda Curlee, Shelly Pumphrey and Oliver Hedgepeth from American Public University System.

Presentation Abstract: The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic produced a re-emergence of a technology-based higher education that created a focus on more technology-driven educational systems. Should teacherbots be incorporated into classroom learning? E-Learning has become an effective learning mechanism, promoted as necessary during the pandemic to provide an ongoing, continuous learning experience. This study, conducted by a team of five American Public University researchers, focuses on students’ perceptions regarding teacherbot applications, defined as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant utilized as a learning provider (e.g., teacher, instructor). This study focuses on teacherbots in the online classroom. After IRB approval, surveys were distributed to students in the Wallace E. Boston School of Business at American Public University and produced a complicated set of results. The goal of the survey was to gain a better understanding of students’ awareness of artificial intelligence and teacherbots in their online classrooms. Quantitative analysis incorporating standard analysis techniques to analyze the data(e.g., mean, average, standard deviation, t-test) was utilized to assess the effectiveness of teacherbots in the classroom. Interestingly, the students created their own variation of the definition of both teacherbots and AI, different from the definition given to them. The majority of students welcomed the idea of incorporating teacherbots in the classroom, as defined by the research. The research study shows further research is needed in the area of teacherbots for both in-person and e-learning classroom environments.
