Successful Pathways for African American Female Leaders Navigating Barriers in Corporate America

The programming committee for the 77th Annual SAM International Business Conference is pleased to announce the acceptance of the presentation Successful Pathways for African American Female Leaders Navigating Barriers in Corporate America, authored by Deanna Davis of Northcentral University.

Presentation Abstract: This research study was designed to determine how the intersection of race and gender identities contributed to the elements of leadership development by African American corporate executives. The research sought to explore strategies future leaders might utilize to address leadership development and career ascendency for African American females. A phenomenological research design captured the lived experiences of individuals from their perspectives. The analysis uncovered themes that challenged structural and normative assumptions. Despite the barriers the participants encountered, these women have learned how to navigate in an environment where inequities, negative assumptions and doubts were prevalent. Even through adversity, these African American female leaders have persevered and continue to demonstrate their ability to rise above and perform with tenacity.
While women continue to enter the workforce in greater numbers and have made progress into management positions, access to senior leadership ranks remain limited. As evidenced by studies recorded in the literature, it is prudent to investigate the leadership development modalities required to identify and develop African American female leaders. This presentation will focus on recommendations and best practices on how to obtain and sustain leadership positions in corporate settings. Participants will learn how to overcome obstacles to successfully secure leadership roles. Academic colleagues can also benefit by understanding and teaching the importance of ensuring diversity and inclusion in corporate and academic environments.
