This year at SAMIBC2020 we are pleased to announce another of our presenters, Deniz Gevrek from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. Deniz will be presenting the paper Management of Economic Development: Gender parity in Education and Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Presentation Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between the ratification of Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and gender parity in education using a data set that contains 190 UN-member countries observed for 39 years, 1980-2018. We focus on the three measures of gender equality in education: (1) Female/Male Primary Enrollment ratio, (2) Gross Secondary Gender Parity Index, and (3) Gross Tertiary Gender Parity Index. The results suggest that there is a positive statistically significant relationship between CEDAW ratification and gender parity favoring girls in terms of primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Our results imply that international treaties may play an important role in managing economic development by empowering women.
