Southern Illinois University at Carbondale finished first in the 1979-80 Campus Chapter Performance Program. SIU was the strongest of the Superior Performance Winners, a group that included the College of St. Thomas in second place and St. Norbert College in third.
The awards were made at this year’s National Student Career Conference, which was held jointly with S.A.M.’s National Conference in Chicago last May. The performance program recognizes the outstanding achievements of S.A.M.’s campus chapters during the past year. To be competitive a chapter must excel in each of four categories, including membership recruitment, professional activities, chapter management, and general activities.
SIU Chapter President Nick Matras attributed his chapter’s strong showing to the “bond” among the members, a “cohesiveness that enables us to work together closely on projects.” With over 110 members, SIU at Carbondale is one of S.A.M.’s larger campus chapters. According to Matras, that reflects his chapter’s efforts to provide “diversified programs that appeal to a variety of people, not just one type of person or one type of academic major.”
Under the program’s system, SIU scored 218,200 points, right ahead of College of St. Thomas with 189,300 points, and St. Norbert College with 160,750. West Virginia State College, with 109,700, was Honorable Performance Winner. SAM-NI
