For the first time ever, S.A.M.’s student chapters held a national Career Conference. The meeting was held in Chicago last May in conjunction with the Society’s National Conference.

Students from chapters all over the country attended the conference. Michele Cohen, who chaired the program committee for the student conference, said afterward that she had been pleased by the size of student participation. “Considering the fact that it was finals time for most of the students, the turnout for the conference was very good,” said Cohen.

Numerous firms were represented at the Career Conference, including such organizations as Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Arthur Andersen Co., Leo Burnett Co., Inland Steel Co., and Sears Roebuck & Co. The Society itself was represented at a seminar conducted by Lou Morgenier, S.A.M.’s director of campus chapter operations. Morgenier emphasized the importance of student participation in determining the programs and setting the goals of S.A.M.’s campus division.

One of the highlights of the student conference was an address by Terry Savage of NBC at the conference banquet. Ms. Savage, an economic analyst with NBC in Chicago, spoke of the mixed prospects for graduating jobseekers this year, predicting a prolonged recession aggravated by election-year politics. Her advice to graduates was to wait out the recession and lower their first-job expectations in anticipation of a better economy to come.

The outstanding performers in the 1979-80 Campus Chapter Performance Program were honored at the banquet, along with the organizers of the Chicago conference.

Certificates of appreciation for their hard work were given to Charles A. Marx of Southern Illinois University and Theresa Cichocki of Northeastern Illinois University, co-chairmen of the conference; Ms. Cohen of Northeastern Illinois University; Lynn Gabrielson of Northeastern Illinois University, hospitality chairman; Nick Matras of Southern Illinois University, treasurer and head of registration; Carl Gustavsen, vice-president of campus relations for the St. Louis senior chapter; and John Kelly, vice-president of campus relations for the Chicago senior chapter.
