By Clifford J. Doubek, SAM President
All of us should be proud to be members of the Society for Advancement of Management with its rich tradition, a tradition we emphasize in our new brochure featuring Frederick W. Taylor and Dr. Lillian Gilbreth on its cover. I encourage you to participate in our programs and become part of this management tradition. S.A.M. is a nonprofit, volunteer organization; in our New York headquarters there are only two paid professionals on staff. We depend on the individual contributions of our members for success.

Our record has been good these last two years, but it is imperative that we improve on that performance this year. Since 1978, we have been refining our five-year plan. This year, with planning complete, implementation and follow-up will be emphasized.
The most direct measure of success is membership growth. We will be depending on our chapter presidents and membership vice-presidents to provide key support in the achievement of membership growth goals. Two years ago we achieved a membership increase of 20 percent, and I believe it is reasonable to achieve a 25 percent increase this year. As you know, there are a number of excellent programs to help us achieve our objectives. There are the AMA mailings (don’t forget AMA customers); the “I Got Mine” recruitment program; and student/graduate member conversions. In addition, we are looking at the possibility of advertising at regional and national levels.
It should be emphasized that we are a chapter organization. If we “drop the ball” at the chapter level, our programs will not succeed. We do, however, have an organizational structure composed of area directors, regional vice-presidents, and national officers who are anxious to assist. Do not hesitate to take advantage of their help if you are not sure how to make maximum, efficient use of the many programs available to you. SAM-NI
