By Hal Batten National Vice-President, Programming

S.A.M. members join the Society for myriad reasons. One of the more prominent ones is to be able to take advantage of the management programs offered by the local chapters. It was recognition of this interest in our educational programs that led the board of directors to choose to create the position of national vice-president-programming, and it is my privilege to serve in that capacity.

A 16-member committee was selected to serve as an information bank on management programming of current interest. Our committee members come from all walks of management from industry and business, from universities and colleges, from the staff of S.A.M., and from retired executives. These people include recipients of the Gilbreth Medal Award, the Phil Carroll Award, and the Human Relations Award, as well as recipients of the Professional Manager and S.A.M. Fellow designations.

During the past summer and fall, the committee has been reviewing subjects of interest to the S.A.M. membership. Over 100 subjects have been rated in terms of current interest, relevance to the manager of today, and future interest. The committee has agreed that the following list of subjects represent the most interesting and most valuable subjects to be explored by vice-presidents of programming within the local chapters:

  • Does Success Change Managers?
  • Career Development Is Taking Root in Large Corporations
  • Action Learning: Solving Real Problems with Peer Participation
  • The Effects of Participative Management Development on Leadership Style
  • Strategies for organizational change
  • What skills will future executives need and how should they be taught
  • Mentoring as a training tool for future business executives
  • track down productivity problems
  • Worker discontent: how much and why?
  • Retirement: A profusion of Facts
  • Enlightened Management versus Enlightened Labor
  • Vitality as a limited resource
  • Quality of Work Life Learning from Tarrytown
  • Japan – A useful mirror

Currently, the committee members are working on the compilation of books, lists of speakers, and published articles on these and other subjects. It is also working on preparing a recom· mended speech outline on these subjects.

We hope to have this information ready for use by chapter officers in the next few months. Meanwhile, we are always open to suggestions and would appreciate any ideas or other submissions you send to S.A.M. headquarters. SAM-NI
