Harold C. (“Chad”) McClellan, a retired businessman, was presented with the 1976 S.A.M. International Human Relations Award at a special ceremony before the Los Angeles chapter in March, reports Belinda Black, L.A. chapter president. Making the presentation was Donald Begosh, S.A.M. director.

The award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the field of human relations and was initiated in 1944 to emphasize the prime importance of human relations in management. McClellan was the 29th recipient of the award; other notable recipients have been Lawrence Appley, Henry Ford II, Rensis Likert, J.C. Penney, and Elmer Winter.

McClellan, who lives in Palm Desert with his wife Katherine, was nominated in recognition of his community concern and guidance during the Watts riots of the 1960s. He was also cited for his personal involvement in humanitarian causes over the past several years. He is perhaps most widely known for his coordination of the U.S. private enterprise exhibit that toured Russia in the 1950s. He has also been involved in many other business and community projects over the last 20 years.

Asked for her comments about the presentation, Black replied, “I am personally excited by our chapter’s participation in this event because it shows how much progress we have made in the past several years.

The strength of S.A.M. has always resided in autonomous, hard-working local chapters, and the fact that we have been able to plan and host this activity-which until now was presented by international-helps build self-confidence and makes S.A.M. more attractive to managers who have not joined. Southern California is one of S.A.M.’s most progressive regions, and we feel this presentation is another example of what a chapter and region can do if they work hard and put their hearts into the work.” SAM-NI
